Winter Break

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a safe and happy New Year! This pat Sunday, December 28, I fished a double. I had Charlie Chamberlin Jr. and Sr. in the morning and Clay Olsen and is dad in the afternoon. The day started out tough but we ended the first trip strong with a dozen Sheepsheads and 4 Reds.



On the second trip, we tried to catch some Sheeps but to no avail. We fished a ton of spots looking for the Reds and Trout and came up empty. In the last hour of the trip, we finally put a quick 10 fish in the boat. Including these two beauties.



Like it has been for the past few months, the fishing is outstanding right now. Today was a little hard with the wind blowing 30 but we caught a Redfish. It was disappointing for a lot of guides from what I hear. It should be nothing short of spectacular when the wind stops! Thanks to all my clients for a great year of fishing and don't forget to checkout TideLine magazine next week. I am going to have the cover shot! Just wanted to see if this thing is working. I am now going to be able to put pictures right on the blog. This one was taken while doing an article for SC Sportsman. We caught a bunch of keeper reds in the 20-23 inch range and some that were in the 30 inch range. It was a great day of fishing and I can't wait to take these guys, and Lady, again . I have to thank Brian Carrol of Marine Markting Group for taking the photos, Dan Kibler of SC Sportsman for doing the artcile. I hope everyone checks it out. Its that time of year!!!!!

I hope everyone is doing well.  The past few weeks have been busy but very productive.  I am sorry that I have not been posting to this blog very much but hopefully I am about to make up for it.  I guess I will start with yesterday.  I took a few return clients from the Farm Bureau Insurance agency up to Bull's Bay and absolutely crushed the fish!!! Not only did we catch almost 60 fish but we also caught 6 different species including 36 Redfish, 11 Black Drums, 6 Sheepshead, 2 large trout, 1 black sea bass, and 1 stingray.  What a trip.  Last weekend we had the Lowcountry Red Trout Tournament for Cystic Fibrosis.  I won top honors with Guide to Grand Champion Angler, Guide to Grand Champion Team, Guide to Largest Trout and Guide to Grand Champion Fly Division.  It was a great weekend but the real winner was Cystic Fibrosis.  We raised a net total of over 130,000.00 in two days!   

 

 

The fishing has been absolutely outstanding!  As long as you can find some clean water that is a little warmer than surrounding areas, you should be able to do well.  They have been biting the DOA's very well and the Electric Chicken paddle tails also.

Hot Weather and Hot Fishing!!!!

August 1st

    Peter Geosits and his kids had a great trip.  They wanted to catch sharks so that's what we did.  We started in the Harbor catching 10-25 lb Bonnet head Sharks!!!  After quite a few, we decided to go catch some reds.  W ventured up past wild dunes and found some clean water on the incoming tide and caught 9 nice ones.  It seems that nine is a frequent number this year. 

    In the afternoon, I had a couple of great kids and their mom, Kathryn.  Braxton was one of the kids and was very enthusiastic about fishing.  He wanted to catch sharks while his brother wanted to catch Reds.  We caught a huge 35 inch Red at the jetties and a few sharks.  We then proceeded to the waterway where we caught a few more Reds.  It was a windy and stormy afternoon and we came home a little early.  It was a successful trip though and I will se them again over fall break.

Good Showing for "Joe's Buddy"

We made a great showing for the tournament on July 19th.  We caught 6 big Sheepshead in the morning and weighed in two of them around 5 pounds.  We also finished out the day behind Sullivan's Island catching Reds in the last minute to weigh in two nice ones.  The Reds had to have at least 3 spots so the other 12 we caught did not count!  3rd place Red and 4th place Sheep!!!!  A great day to raise money for cancer.

 

 

On July 28th, I took my parent's dentist, Nick Papadea, and his cousin.  We caught some nice 30+ inch reds north of wild dunes and a couple more in the waterway behind Sullivan's Is.  The wind was blowing and the water was muddy but we pulled out a few nice ones anyway.

Windy!!!!!

    Yesterday I took Greg Gambell, his 16 year old daughter, 13 year old son, and their two cousins fishing for reds and trout.  We started out at 9:00 and headed north up the waterway.  Within 15 minutes, we had a nice 20-25 inch red on!  One of the girl thought it was too much to handle and wound up letting the fish get under the boat and broke it off.  We had 6 nice bites at that spot in the fist 45 minutes.  They missed all of them.  Oh well, chalk it up to a learning experience I guess.  We ran from the rain for a minute then made our way to some docks.  After catching one red fish, we ended up the day with 1 break off and 7 missed bites and 3 pulled hooks.  The kids just were not feeling it yesterday. Better luck next time!  It's days like this that are hardest.  I think the main reason we missed fish was because of the wind.  It pushes your line around and the current acts funny and its sometimes hard for the inexperienced to see or feel the bite. 

    This coming Saturday, we have a tournament to benefit the "Joe's Buddy" organization.  Joe was a local young man  that was very popular and well liked.  He passed away a few years ago and some of his friends started the foundation to make an artificial reef in his honor.  Saturday is the 1st annual fishing tournament to help raise money to build another reef.  Trout, Red Fish, Sheepshead, and Flounder are going to be our target species for the day.  I'll keep everyone posted on how we do.  Thanks to everyone for checking in every now and then and just remember, you can't win it if you ain't in it.  Till next time, tight lines not tight drags!

I had about a week off since the last entry.  I don't know why it is slower this year but it is.   On 6/20, I took the winners of the raffle at the annual SOS cookout at Gold Bug Island.  Rewis Morris and some of his buddies decided to try and catch a fish or two.  We fished the outgoing tide around the harbor and wound up with 9 reds, 5 trout, and 4 flounder.  Another stellar day on the water.

 

On the 23rd, I had return client Jim McGuire and his son Shawn.  The water was really green and dirty but the fishing was still ok.  We caught 10 nice reds with the largest weighing in at 15 pounds.  All of the fish ate whole and cut menhaden.

 

On the 25th, I took Trip Cuttino to catch some reds and trout and to our surprise, we ended up with 6 reds, 2 sheepshead, and a 9 lb trout!  The biggest trout I have ever seen caught.

 

Harry Wedewer and his troops call me up to go on the 26th and we again and another good day of fishing with 10 slot reds and a nice flounder.    We fished the outgoing tide up past wild dunes and the water was green and dirty.

 

On the 28th, I took Brad and Rence to catch some sheepshead and that is just what we did.  7 sheepshead and 9 reds.  A great trip by any standards.

Another hot and busy week it has been.  Since the last entry fishing has picked up a bit with the introduction of a few common summer friends, Flounder!  Oh how I love flounder.  on Sunday, 6/8, I took Clint, DC, and Uncle dick fishing.  The Cole clan had a great trip.  We caught roughly 15 trout in the 2-5 pound range.  We were targeting reds and trout but when the trout started biting, it was hard to leave.  We fished the incoming tide in the waterway and the wind was blowing SW @ 5-10 mph.   

 

On Friday, 6/13, I took the Long Family.  My buddy Matt Verner at Off The Hook referred them to me and Its a good thing because we had a great day of fishing.  We caught 13 reds and about as many trout.  There were a few missed bites but the Longs did pretty well.  A couple of sharks finished out the day.

 

On Saturday, 6/14, I had a double.  The morning was beautiful and Gary and Cynthia Rippon, who have fished with me for 4 years, caught 8 reds and 9 trout and 2 flounder.  A pretty productive morning of outgoing tide in the Charleston Harbor!

 

That afternoon, the wind picked up and David Jr., his Dad, and I, tried to fish the Harbor.  It was a little rough so we headed up the waterway where we caught some ladyfish and some sand sharks.  The water was muddy in Copahee Sound and we couldn't find any redfish.  Looks like David and his Dad get a free one on me next time.

 

On fathers day morning, I took past clients Justin Prusienski and his Dad.  We caught 16 big reds in the 15-20 lb range last time and did pretty well Sunday too.  7 nice reds, 4 big flounder, and 5 huge trout.  Oh what a great day in the Harbor.

Charleston Harbor

This past week was busy and tons of fun!  On Tuesday, 6/3, one of my regulars, Chris Flannigan, wanted to go catch some redfish and that is exactly what we did.  We went way north almost to Bull's Bay and caught 12 reds and 1 eight pound sheepshead.  The largest redfish was 8 lbs and the rest were right in the 21-23 inch range.  Great slot fish.  Would have been nice to have them during the IFA Tournament in May.  They were eating everything, mud minnows, shrimp, live and cut menhaden.  We even caught one on a DOA smoke colored shrimp.  It was a great trip for Chris since the last few times have ben extremely windy.  The fish were eating throughout the outgoing tide and you could se them pushing right on the edge of the oyster beds.

On Friday, May 30th, I did a trip for New York Life and it just so happened that one of the guys on my boat was a friend of mine.  They booked the trip through an agency so he didn't know he would be going with me until he got there.  We started off the day in the Charleston Harbor catching bonnet head, and sharp nose sharks.  After about a dozen of them, we made our way up the Wando where the action was not as fierce to say the least.  It was a fun trip though and the guys and gals from New York life had a great time.

On Thursday, 5/29, Kevin Caldwell and his new bride wanted to catch some honeymoon fish so we started off with some sharks in the middle of the harbor and ended with some nice trout in the waterway north of Wild Dunes.  A great way to start the 4 day weekend.  Congrats to Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell!!!

On Tuesday, 5/27, after breaking my toe on Monday at the beach, I took John, John Jr. and Joanna, to catch some trout and redfish.  Once again my spots produced plenty of bights to keep everyone busy even me.  W caught a few nice reds and some trout north of Wild Dunes on the outgoing tide.  Its shaping up to be a productive summer already.  Until next time, don't forget to put the plug in!!!

It has been a busy week here in Charleston, SC.  Monday, 5/19 was so windy that I postponed both of the trips scheduled for that day.  Tuesday, 5/20 was another windy day but the trout fishing was excellent.  We had 30 or 40 bites and caught 20 or 25 trout in the 1-4 lb range.  Wednesday the 21st was another windy day but it started out nice.  I picked up Freddy Myers and his friend Billy at Dahoo Landing in Edisto.  We ventured out to the North Edisto River in search of big roe trout.  We caught a few just north of Wadmalaw Sound but the water was extremely muddy.  I think the wind has had a serious effect on the water color and temperature.  The trout we did catch there were small.  We did however catch a nice 2.5 lb, 19 inch trout on the west bank by Botany Island.  We caught a few more on the east point.  It seems as though the trend is 1 or 2 fish in each spot.  The is very indicative of a transition period.  The bigger fish will be leaving the large schools in the creeks and heading out to deeper and cooler water near the river mouths.  Today, was another rough day of fishing.  The whether was great but the bite was very sporadic.  Same as yesterday, 1 or 2 trout in every spot.  Tomorrow, whether permitting, will be the first day at the jetties this year.  Keep checking back for details, this is the beginning of the season for giant reds!!!!  Until next time, hang on tight and don't forget to breath.

Wednesday, May 7

Today I had a corporate trip with 2 other boats.  I hired Jeff Yates and Johnny Krislip to run the other two boats.  All of the boats caught fish.  Trout, Reds, and Sharks were the bite of the day with the occasional small blue fish as well.  The tides were not as strong as they have been the past few days so the fishing was a little better.  The whether was once again perfect.  Overall it was a successful day and the company was great.  I hope my clients had as much fun as I did.  Until next time, keep the boat ready!

Sunday May, 4th

Sunday, May 4th

Today was beautiful spring day that felt more like August than May.  It was hot and calm.  The small menhaden have stated running in the harbor so we caught enough to fish and went on our way.  The trout have been biting on and off and the reds are moving out of the creeks and into the deeper river where the water is a little cooler.  Mark French from and His brother Chandler brought Mark's son Liam to catch some fish.  Liam wanted to catch sharks so after catching 1 trout out of about 15 bites, we went to the harbor to catch some sharks.  This was the first shark trip of the summer but there were no bonnetheads.  As soon as they start biting, the big reds should be out at the jetties.  We caught 8 or ten sharks and came home.  It was a great trip and I thoroughly enjoyed the company.  I can't wait to take them again.  Until next time, keep the boat ready!
